When did a waffle become a criss-crossed pancake? Boxes and boxes of pancake mixes with instructions for using them to make either pancakes or waffles. Yes, I know that pancakes are soft while most waffles are crispy outside, soft inside. But what about the taste? I don't know if you can remember when there was a real taste difference, but I do. What made that difference?
Going through my Grandmother's old recipes, I discovered that waffles have a couple of different ingredients. Both contain flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, eggs, milk, and butter. Only waffles contained vanilla and malt. Ahha! Those made the tasty difference!
So, how does one mix make both? The answer is...it can't. It can only make a copy of the original.
